Although the oilfields at the Petrolia Discovery no longer stretch the length and bredth of Lambton County, the museum site still contains dozens of wells from the old oil days which remain dormant and closed since the decline of Petrolia's Victorian oil boom in the early part of the 20th century. Each year the Petrolia Discovery Foundation reopens one of these dormant wells and recussitates it to life. One lucky person a year has the pleasure of winning one of Canada's most unique prizes, in the form of a ten-year "Oil Barony."

Raffle tickets are $10 CDN each, or 6 for $50. Winners recieve the greater amount of either $500.00 /year or 12.5% of total oil well revenue/year (actual amount recieved in this case depends on the fluctuating price of oil), for ten years. In addition, the winners of the oil win the opportunity to name their own well, as well as a weekend of theatre and first-class accomodation in Petrolia to meet with some of Petrolia's established oil families and enjoy a luxurious weekend among Petrolia's upper crust as a bona fide oil baron. Prizes are awarded for second and third place runners-up as well.

All proceeds from the Black Gold Raffle go to The Petrolia Discovery Foundation Inc. to restore and operate the 19th century oil field as an historical, recreational and educational tourist attraction.
